The Sec 2 subject combination decision arrives before most students and parents have had time to understand the criteria behind it fully. However, the subjects you offer from Sec 3 onwards determine your O-Level results and the post-secondary pathways available at JC or polytechnic.

In turn, a poorly planned combination can close off options before you have had the chance to consider them. As such, getting it right at the outset is far easier than trying to adjust later.

How Sec 2 Subject Placement Works

Under the current Full Subject-Based Banding streaming system in secondary schools, students take individual subjects at different levels (G1, G2, or G3) based on their readiness in each subject. This means a student can take G3 Maths alongside G2 English, or any other combination, without being locked into one track across the board.

The Sec 2 streaming process assesses each subject separately, so your results in one subject have no bearing on your level placement in another. You can also request to offer a subject at a higher level, subject to the school's assessment. Knowing the school's typical thresholds early gives you time to work toward them before the subject combination is finalised.

Compulsory Subjects and What You Can Add

Four compulsory subjects carry through into upper secondary:

  • English Language (this grade is used in every post-secondary admission formula)
  • Mother Tongue Language
  • Mathematics
  • Combined Humanities (includes Social Studies plus one elective Humanities subject, such as Geography, History, or Literature)

On top of this compulsory base, you add electives to complete your O-Level subject combination. The most commonly available options include:

  • Science subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) are available individually at G2 or G3 level.
  • Additional Mathematics is available if your Sec 2 Maths results are strong.
  • Other electives, such as Principles of Accounts, Design and Technology, and Art, are also available depending on the school's offerings.

How Your Subject Combination Affects JC and Polytechnic Admission

The JC Pathway

JC admission is computed from G3-level results. If your core subjects are predominantly at G2 level, you will generally not meet JC entry requirements, as the L1R5 formula is built around G3 performance in English and four relevant subjects.

The two main JC streams each have their own subject requirements:

  • Science stream: Mathematics, up to two Sciences, and a contrasting Humanities subject
  • Arts or Humanities stream: A combination of Humanities and Languages

There is no triple science stream at JC level, so you do not need all three pure Sciences in secondary school to access it.

Beyond the stream requirements, strong G3 results across both Sciences and Humanities keep both JC streams open. Narrowing too early into an all-Science or all-Humanities combination may leave you with fewer JC subject combination options than expected.

The Polytechnic Pathway

For polytechnic admission, the standard aggregate covers five subjects (English, two relevant subjects, and the best subject). The best four are computed at G3 level, and one subject is computed at its G2 equivalent grade. In practical terms, you can qualify with four strong G3 subjects and one at G2 level.

Beyond the aggregate, specific polytechnic courses carry their own subject prerequisites beyond the aggregate score. Common examples include:

  • STEM-related diplomas, such as Engineering, require demonstrated strength in the relevant Sciences.
  • Business or Media diplomas rely more heavily on English and Humanities performance.
